How to Get Started on Upwork

Ultimate Work from home Guide with 100+ companies hiring now plus sites for extra cash https://payhip.com/b/lz3ov

There are some basic things that you will need in order to set up your profile on Upwork which include a computer, Internet connection, and a skill.  Freelancers can post their profile and skill set and those clients who are looking for a specific genre of workers will contact you.  Keep in mind that you can apply to 20 different freelance jobs at a time.

What is the Signup Process like for Upwork?

When you join Upwork, you will be asked to showcase your abilities and take a number of tests to validate the skills you claim to possess.  For example, if you use SEO optimization as one of your skills then you would have to take a specific test so that clients could see how you scored in that category.  You do have the option of taking some tests multiple times and others will only allow you to retake the test after a month.  Some of the tests may have a time limit to answer the questions but they are specific to the skill you have.

Testing Tips for Upwork

  • Back up your skills by getting a good score on a test compatible with that skill set.
  • The English grammar tests can be a little complicated but you may still be able to get work if you don’t get a score as high as you would like.  Some freelancers charge $15-$20 an hour and still get work on Upwork even though they may not do as well on the more complicated tests.
  • Do not worry if you are not in the top 10 percentile in every test you take.
  • You should do well in the basic tests if you have a high school education.

How can I get my profile to stand out from other freelancers?

If you have special knowledge about website design or SEO optimization, simple knowledge of Microsoft Office to writing C++code for websites, or another skill, your profile will tend to stand out from others.  You can also post a unique resume for each job that you are applying for.

Another thing you can try is to make a video of yourself showing off your personality and introducing yourself briefly.  It definitely helps when a client sees a video of someone they are going to hire.  If you don’t want to make a video, add a good, quality portrait photo of yourself. Upwork states that it can increase your chances of up to 5x of getting hired.

Make sure to include samples of your work and showcase your abilities, whether it be writing, web design, or other abilities, successes, and achievements.  If you just try at least one of these suggestions, it will help your profile to stand out from other freelancers on Upwork.

How much can I expect to earn at Upwork?

Upwork is definitely a site that I would recommend for you to use for high-paying gigs and to make extra money online.  In the beginning, I would advise you to treat Upwork as supplemental income and develop a good relationship with a few clients that always have work at certain times of the year and pay well.  Then you can establish Upwork as full-time work-at-home income.

Here is a personal experience from one of my readers who does freelance work for Upwork that you can read over below.

The best project I had at Upwork was writing for the sports section of the UB (University of Buffalo) college newspaper.  I am a sports enthusiast and I primarily wrote articles for the UB Bulls football team and basketball team.  While they pick and choose which articles they liked best for the paper, I was paid for everything I contributed.  Even if it was not published.  Ultimately, college football and basketball ended and there was no project available the following September.  Most of what you do on Upwork will be a variety of different projects.  You may work for the same client multiple times and develop a good relationship but it is unlikely you will be doing the same exact project again.
